Hidden Gem of California - Alviso Marina County Park Alviso Marina County Park in San Jose, California has reddish-brown pools of water on its shoreline that are discolored by salt deposits from the area’s old mining industry. Why are these ponds reddish brown? It’s natural. Due to tiny microscopic organisms specialized to live in very salty water live here, including the microscopic algae known as Dunaliella salina and halobacterium.
